Re: Big Island VOG and lodging location questions. Clear skies on the Big Island are more probable in the South Kohala area near Puako but away from resort or harbor lights. Just walk out into an open area & look up. As for clear skies in Volcano it's a crap shoot. It's more probable to be raining.

On Kauai I just never experience the "stink-eye" many folks do on other islands like Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island. Even though I've only lived there (part time) a few years, no locals or kama'aina (including most of which I don't know) have ever given me a dirty look. My wife and I are both haole, but we blend well for the most part.

On the Big Island it’d be Volcanoes National Park and the vast expanses of lava.
